  • Mods & Rockers! *Updated!

One of the great things about living in Los Angeles is the Egyptian Theatre.  Hot on the heels of its Japanese Giant Monsters festival comes Mods & Rockers, featuring ultra-groovy sixties psych-outs such as Danger: Diabolik, Barbarella and The Loved One.  The festival runs from July 8th to July 17th.

And how have we missed this!  For those in NYC, there are some great regular screenings at Coney Island.  The August 13th program with Santo in the Wax Museum looks like a winner.  (No mention of those Lucha vixens from La Gata Negra, but we understand they’ll be there).  Then on August 27th is a screening of a film we now have to track down and see, The Girl and The Geek.  No, it’s not part of the Revenge Of The Nerds series.

“Oh no, it’s a banana hotel!”

Some very cool 3D artwork from the boring3d.com daily archive. (thanks to Gabe for the link! P.S. I am going to start learning 3D (Maya) very soon… this will be extremely useful for toy/figure designs and our big new Lucha animated project.) – Lili

So it’s that Comic-Con time of year. If you see either of us wandering around please don’t hesitate to say hi!

  • Why we love Lucha…

Whenever we do interviews about ¡Mucha Lucha!, we’re always asked the same question: “How is Lucha Libre different from American Pro-Wrestling?”

Well from now on, we’re just gonna shut up and show this picture, which really says it all…

  • Eurotrash!  (It’s closer than you think…) by Eddie

One of the hidden delights of television is Community Access Cable.  When you get sick of Nick at Nite’s endless loop of Roseanne or Three’s Company, sometimes (and I repeat sometimes) you can stumble across fascinating little offerings located in the nether-regions of your remote.  Shows like ‘Pandora Peaks Speaks’ which features the titular adult movie star and her gal pals just cooking (as only they know how) and chewin’ the fat.  This show gives new meaning to the dish ‘Naked Shrimp’.

Then there’s this little gem – Intervision.  Last week it was a Greek variety show.  This week it was a spectacular Russian singing/dancing extravanganza that put Eurovision to shame.

Unidentified Russian chanteuse sings ‘Lonely Bubble Guy’

    It’s a rocking good way on Intervision…

Maybe I’m just missing SBS in Australia (our multi-cultural channel), but it feels kinda nice that Europe isn’t that far out of reach from the US after all.

Which begs the question…why haven’t there been any Eurotrash wrestlers?  WCW kinda hinted at it with Berlyn  (his burly offsider was…you guessed it…’The Wall’), but didn’t go far enough.

  • CONTEST!

*UPDATE – The CDs have been won! Thanks to everyone who took part…

Finally, Eddiemuerte’s CD  – Ruido Blanco – is pressed and about to be released on Cdbaby.com (more info when it’s actually available)

If you like lo-fi beats, bleeps and the occasional reference to Lucha Libre, then this could be for you!  If not, buy it anyway for the cool Lili Chin cover/inside/label art!

Eddie has three copies to give away to the first three people who can answer this question:

Q: The track ¡Ayuda! ¡Ayuda! contains a voice sample from a famous Mexican luchador.  Who is the luchador, and what ¡Mucha Lucha! episode is the sample from?

Check out Eddiemuerte’s website for info!

    Email your answers to eddiemuerte(at)gmail(dot)com

  • We got THE FLEA!

Thank you to Jorge for this cool gift from Mexico! What a pleasant surprise!

If you are wondering why Warner Bros has not released an (ahem) “authorized” version for sale in the USA…. all I can say is this - It’s a damn shame that large corporations tend not to take financial risks with Mexican maskmakers who have no proven track record in the U.S. licensing biz.

Anyhow, the fact that Mucha Lucha hoods are OUT THERE and available to fans of the show makes us very proud and happy

  • Our little joke

… about the number of characters in Mucha Lucha. (Like Poke-mon, get it?)

Eddie has just found these pages on my old computer. I don’t even remember doing this artwork, it was so long ago! As you can see, they are very early designs, and some of these characters never even made it into the series.

  • Go Go GO, Cosmic Baby!

Just a little reminder for those who don’t scroll down past the latest entry .  Lili has fixed the link, so the Cosmic Baby episodes can be viewed HERE

These are big video files that are best suited to broadband.

Hopefully one day we’ll get to make more episodes for TV.

P.S. Sorry… These should work now! Please let us know if there are any problems…

  • Gus Arriola -Eddie

Compiling reference for Secret Lucha Project Nine Million (nice working title, Keith ), led me to revisit Gus Arriola’s Gordo.  Gordo ran for decades as a newspaper strip, and I’ve always loved Arriola’s design.  He also designed those awesome bad guys and titular hero in MGM’s The Lonesome Stranger cartoon (below)

  • Tokyo Pig -by Eddie

I’d never heard of this until today when the DVD caught my eye.  Typical zany anime, (so fast It felt like I’d watched the whole series, but it was just the first episode!) Tokyo Pig has apparently come and gone with nary a blip on the TV radar.

I was looking forward to One Piece after hearing good things, but was really disappointed with it  – especially with the animation.  Tokyo Pig makes up for it with some really inventive sequences scattered throughout
