  • ¡Mucha Lucha! Sketchbook?

We’ve saved all the initial sketches and rough artwork from the past three seasons, and plan to put them all in a sketchbook.  Here are some examples of inital sketches and unused thumbnail sketches.  Also a page from Miss Lili’s fantastic guide to drawing Lucha holds…which was sadly underused.

  • Website update – Cosmic Baby!

We have updated our website with Cosmic Baby pilot episodes. These 7-minute shorts were produced 2 years ago. (Fwak/Cartoon Network Asia-Pacific co-production) Warning: Very large video files. Broadband connection & patience required!

UPDATE: Apologies to everyone trying to access these shorts.  There is a technical problem which we’ll try to fix as soon as we can.

    FIXED!

  • Kraftwerk

[photo by justinpward via Flickr's Kraftwerk-tagged photos]

Eddie: In Pulp Fiction, Mia tells Vinnie Vega that people fall into two categories: Elvis People or Beatles people.  Well Quentin, bless his heart, forgot about Kraftwerk people!

It was weird seeing them in the open air at the Greek Theatre.  Kraftwerk in Hollywood?!?  And as they started, it really was as though they’d appeared from another dimension to inhabit our time and space for two hours.

This is their fourth decade, and they’re still the sound of the future.  Always on the outside of all the music genres; not Rock, not Pop, not Dance, not Techno – just Kraftwerk.  Kraftwerk live has progressed to a point where the music/visuals are as integrated and slick as their sequencers.

Yet there’s something really moving about their melodies, and they still have that tongue in cheek approach in songs like Pocket Calculator (in which they pre-empted 8Bit music, two decades ago).  Their songs have been reworked with different beats and arrangements, which really makes them sound fresh.  As I said to Lili :”It’s the world that has dated, not Kraftwerk”.  Fantastic show.

Lili: The most awesome concert I’ve ever been to. I managed to evade the camera nazis… Here are some tiny and blurry video clips from the show.

  • Photos of the week

Evan Newby, our talented animator/designer friend (who animated on Cosmic Baby, and was also one of ML Season 3′s Character Designers) has been visiting from Sydney, so Eddie and I have been introducing Evan to some of our favorite spots in Los Angeles, and also discovering some places we’d never been to. A selection of happy pics:

GR-Eats is Giant Robot’s new cafe/restaurant. Ecclectic Asian/Latin menu, brightly lit with cute minimalist decor. We stopped by for lunch, visited the Giant Robot stores and bought two cool books: Little Boy: The Arts of Japan’s Exploding Subculture (Takashi Murakami) and Chromaphile (Ragnar).

La Luz Gallery: Mark Atomos Pilon exhibition.

The Lucky Tiki. Eddie and I had just done a ‘Super Mahi Tiki’ email interview with Tiki Mag … and here was where we met up with Eileen, writer/editor of the magazine. God only knows why the coolest, most lovingly-designed tiki bar of L.A. is stuck all the way out in a Chatsworth strip-mall. So we have come to the conclusion that Susanna at The Lucky Tiki makes THE BEST Polynesian cocktails ever. Yes, although we love our local Tiki-Ti, the drinks are much better here.

…in our exotic booth at the Lucky Tiki.

The Bear Pit (Missouri Bar-B-Q) is located not far from The Lucky Tiki. Sawdust-covered floors, tacky Americana, high-protein gut-churning dinners, and… Preston Blair rip-offs!

At The Bear Pit: Preston Blair’s goose and pig

Brunch at Cha Cha Cha, our favorite Carribean restaurant. We had never been here during the daytime. Wow. We can actually see what we’re eating. Note: The “Chilaquiles” breakfast (scrambled eggs with tortillas, black beans and guacamole) will give you digestive turbulence.

    Doggies for adoption… (sigh)

Hope you enjoyed your visit, Evan!

Stay tuned for Evan’s upcoming new blog…

  • Eurodisco Alert! (eye of the goof). These music videos have to be seen to be believed!

Quick note: We are changing webhosts this week. If something goes weird with our website, this may be why. Sorry, we’ll get things sorted out pronto!

    These are SO sweet!!!

A gift from the talented Evan Newby:

    Thank you Evan.
