  • ChicanomagIssue-1-index

Chican@ Art Magazine is cool. The premiere issue has an awesome cover by the amazing Jaime Germs Zacarias, and a Nacho Libre review by Keith Rainville (which you can read here). Like everybody else these days, they also have a myspace page.

On a different topic; ever noticed how Mel Gibson is referred to as being ‘Australian’ whenever he screws up?  He may have studied in Australia, but America, he’s all yours…

    Encounter

Last week was a dinner organized by Lili at the iconic ‘Encounter’ restaurant at LAX.  This place will always be a tantalizing glimpse of a future that was promised, but never happened…

  • So this year’s San Diego Comic-Con  was super short and sweet for me. And I went straight to my favorite areas (Art Toy section, “Artists’ Alley” & bookstores ) instead of walking through the entire floor of 5000+ booths. With the trains running late all weekend, and the extra millions of people pushing and shoving through the convention center in the stifling heat….  I am so glad to be home!

As always, it was fun to catch up with people I haven’t seen in ages and to make new contacts and put faces to names. Thank you to everyone who showed up at the Mimoco booth for the Ginchy postcard signing on Saturday. (Sorry  if I seemed distracted and cranky… I blame Amtrak!!!!! ) The Ginchy series mimobots will be launched in October.

I wanted to travel light this year, so my purchases were limited to posters, prints and magazines. Here are some favorites:

    abduction
    Mark Gonyea
    Mini comics on posters.

    martinprint

Martin Ontiveros  (@ the Pu Pu Bros booth)
It was tough choosing between this print and a set of really cool cards…

    kdart105_zoom

    Kevin Dart & Chris Turham
Their prints are stunning. I think I will be ordering more online.

Hi Fructose (special Mark Ryden & Viewmaster edition) and Animation Blast #9 .(So bummed that I missed out on Amid’s Cartoon Modern book @ Chronicle)

And this funny FREE quick sketch of Wes by Xaime Hernandez.
(Wes: “A perfect portrait of my anxiety”)
I also stopped by the Wacom booth and learnt how to customize the “express buttons” on my Wacom Cintiq. Now I can put that keyboard aside, and quickly toggle between the drawing tools in Flash (selection, brush, zoom in and out, ctrl G, ctrl Z etc) on the Cintiq monitor itself! Very cool indeed. No more left arm-reaching-for-the-keyboard strain.

    cintiq-popup

…when I click on the left  button, I get a pop-up menu of  Flash keyboard shortcuts. The next two buttons zoom in and out.  All done via Wacom settings in the Control Panel.

  • Comic-Con - Lili

We have received a bunch of emails enquiring about our presence at the San Diego Comic this year. I will be joining the masses either on Friday or Saturday, and if you see me wandering around, please say hi!

Sorry, we don’t have a new volume of the Mucha Lucha Sketchbook this year, but I will be bringing more FREE copies of Vol. 1.

On Saturday you will find me with at the Mimoco booth, signing a very ginchy photo postcard with Brian McCarty for the GINCHY mimobots I designed. Unfortunately, this series isn’t ready for release at the SDCC, but you can preview samples and pre-order.

*UPDATE: I will be at the Mimobot booth on Saturday 22nd, 2.30-3.30pm.

Lucha Libre Links <— After 2 years of neglect, we have updated this page. Man, it’s hard to keep up with all these new blogs, websites, Flickr and YouTube links! :)

  • Bakshi’s latest film

    bakshi-coneyisland

The above pics images from Ralph Bakshi’s latest production – Last Days of Coney Island - were found via this post at the Ralph Bakshi discussion forums.

    Bakshi: “I
am now started with what could be my last feature called Last Days at
Coney Island which I have designed, written and directed. I’ve hired 2
animators – more about them later – and have recorded the first 10
minutes. It’s extremely strange – even for me. Hopefully I can finish
this – it’s extremely low budget which allows me the freedom I want.
It’s only in low budget that the big shots don’t care what you’re
doing. Low budget does not mean bad film. It forces you to make the
    film very direct.”

Right on. Should we look at our small budgets/crews and shake our heads, Bakshi’s attitude towards filmmaking always inspires and motivates!

On a sidenote, we have been receiving email requests for a repost of Scatman Crothers’ “Ahm a Niggerman” on this previous blog entry. Done! You can now download it HERE.

  • Cool stuff

In the process of reorganizing my apartment (living and working) space and finally getting around to framing prints and posters that have been sitting in my closet for way too long, I have been  inspired to seek out new prints to hang on the walls. Check out these wonderful Braniff Airline posters (via World of Kane). They are way too expensive for my current home-furnishing budget so saved jpegs will have to do for now…

Also came across some  “La Grivoise” playing card sets not long ago.($2 each in a sale bin!) Groovy and saucy illustrations!

*UPDATE: See all the cards (orig. French) HERE

When in Paris, I visited a cool flea-market store that specializes in keychains. It appears that they have a website: Porte-cles Publicites – which doesn’t quite do the store justice, but worth checking out if you’re into vintage keychains and cute dangly objects.:)

And thanks, Keith for this link: Lucha Wiki!

  • After lusting after the Wacom Cintiq for six years or more… we finally bought us some!
And can I tell you how much I love this thing. The Cintiq 21UX is so so cool. I am wasting less time tweaking every single freakin’ brushstroke in Flash as you do. My lines are smoother when drawing directly on the monitor. I am doing more roughs directly in the computer = less paper/scanning time! I can even rotate the Cintiq to get nicer curves. This thing is just too awesome. Highly recommended and worth every cent.

    Coming soon:

    Ramona, Link and Betty-Lou.
    by Lili Chin

These mimobots (custom USB memory drives) were designed for Mimoco.com, and will come preloaded with photos by toy photographer Brian McCarty and music by Phofo. The release date is not yet confirmed but you can read about and pre-order the Ginchy mimobots HERE. Or check ‘em out at the San Diego Comic-Con next month…

    Events

Opening Saturday night: Cuadrilatero II at the Tropico de Nopal Gallery.
And this weekend: The L.A. Chinese Food Festival.

  • … Because you all keep asking us about Nacho Libre
    , check these out:-

Boston.com’s article on Lucha Libre’s mass appeal (which includes an interview with our Los Campeones writer – Keith Rainville ) And also this not-too- promising review on Slate.com. Hmmm. Is it another Napoleon Dynamite with “Mexicans”? Yes, I am going to put aside my cynical reservations, see the movie this weekend and decide…

    Going Solo?

Tonight was our final training class on
Toonboom Solo, a vector animation program that surpasses Flash in many ways, bringing back more sophisticated elements of traditional animation programs (eg, Animo 10 years ago) — Character Color Palettes, X-Sheets, Compositing “Node” controls etc. (
Toonboom Harmony is the networkable version, with shared libraries)

We were particularly impressed with the Drawing capabilities (eg, brush strokes are easier to do, they stay consistent and don’t automatically merge/flatten as they do in Flash), and the 3D Camera feature!

2D drawings in 3D space – Click here to see it in action

Then there is the trippy stuff like Morphing (a much more sophisticated version “shape tweening”, to use Flash lingo, but with contour hints that actually work) and Inverse Kinematics where 2D drawings can be manipulated (via joints) as though they were 3D puppets.

No doubt numerous Flash plug-ins already exist to enable features like “rigging”. “camera” and “special effects”, but we find it impressive that Solo/Harmony covers tons of animation features, all in one standalone program.

A big thank you to both Francisco of Toonboom for the training, and to Joel at Film Roman/IDT for setting this up. Can’t wait to receive our free copies of the software to experiment with! It will be interesting to test the compatability between Solo and Flash to see how well the two programs talk to each other…

Update: Final day class Photo! (taken by Joel)

    Other news:
We have now registered FWAK! ANIMATION USA. I guess this makes us an International company. And YAY! Both our greencard applications have been approved. :)

  • Back in L.A.!
    - Lili

It is great to be back home after two glorious weeks of touristy pleasure in Paris and Barcelona. I saw lots of stuff: the Louvre, Notre Dame, Tour Eiffel, Paris Catacombs, mindblowing Gaudi buildings, etc; ate lots of European food, drank lots of red wine, took afternoon siestas, bought some cool crap, talked a bunch of broken Français and Español, and walked until my legs could take no more.

Still jetlagged, but batteries recharged, I am more than ready to dive back into Los Campeones! Also thrilled to join Eddie and other artists/animators on the Toonboom Solo training sessions at IDT. So far, this vector animation software appears to be a pretty awesome alternative to Flash.

Anyway, some cute finds from abroad:

A groovy 1950′s Italian TOUCAN lamp from
Europe’s largest flea markets in Clignancourt, Paris.

Two pens from the Pylones store (Paris)
which has lots of groovy colorful stationery,
    jewelry and kitchenware.

Fan and placemat by Alexis Rom for the Cha Cha Original Store (Barcelona). It’s a pity that they don’t have a website. Alexis Rom’s designs can also be found on drink coasters, tshirts, bags and other stuff.

Part of a latex “zipper” figure series also produced by Barcelona’s
    Cha Cha Original Store.

And last but not least, I had to buy this Catalunyian gem: a Caganer figurine! (They’re all the rage at Christmas)
