  • Los Campeones – where we’re at…

    act2-01_JB_ACT2_0003

    Storyboard panels by Jake Bauming

I know you are all wondering if we have abandoned this blog. No, we
    haven’t!
This month has been extra crazy as we are all working to a supertight schedule. Eddie is currently revising and adding final touches to the Los Campeones storyboards in the same time that characters, props and BGs are being designed and refined. Next week is the Voice Recording session, which means we can then proceed to “Animatic” stage the following week… and then, “Animation!”

We wish we could share more with you and how cool everything looks, but you know how it is…

    Mondo Atomic Vegas

Mondo Lounge Atomic Frolic (Their Myspace page) is happening in Las Vegas next week, and our friend and collaborator, Phofo will be DJ-ing. I happened to be in Las Vegas a week ago for a day, and even though there’s really not much to do there if you don’t gamble, I had a great time!

    CIMG3640 (Medium)

At the Shark Reef exhibition (Mandalay Bay), I saw piranhas, crocodiles, jellyfish, a ton of sharks, and petted a stingray in a very impressive temperature-controlled faux Aztec-ruins environment. I also visited the Bodies exhibition (Tropicana) and later learnt that I could’ve gotten in for FREE if I had signed up with the “Artist’s Program” beforehand<— Sketch something from the exhibition, submit it to their contest. Anyway, this was another very impressive display, some of it highly quirky/disturbing, like the conjoined twins, the jars of fetuses, the stringy and fluffy day-glo (but real!) human nervous systems suspended in glass cases….

Mondo Atomic… Let’s hope we can make it…

    Lili: Hope you all
had a fun Xmas/Hannukah/holiday celebration! Mr. Mort’s Christmas Pudding was very very good. I am now bloated on way too much food and delicious eggy alcoholic concoctions (Snowball and Egg Nog) and man, it’s hard to get back to work.

Seeing that each year I always brag about the groovy gifts I receive from my groovy friends … Here we go again. Pictured above: Cute Day of The Dead figures; a wooden viking ship to go with my vikings figure collection; a cool Ernesto Cabral poster; two magnificent books I highly recommend – Cartoon Modern & Lucha Loco; a vintage swordfish ashtray; a talking Mr. T keyring; an awesome Santo y Blue Demon poster; a Dirty Martini cocktail set and a bottle of Patron XO Cafe <– the shiznit.

Wishing you all a happy and successful 2007!

  • RIP Joseph Barbera

    Like
millions of other kids, we grew up watching Hanna Barbera cartoons, so
it was sad to hear of Mr. Barbera’s passing on Monday.

    One
of the good things about working in-house at Warner Bros Animation on
¡Mucha Lucha!, was the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Mr. B (he
maintained an office there) and attend his annual birthday party at the studio.

He was perpetually wheelchair-bound during our time there, with his assistant Carlton, always by his side.

    Funniest
Mr. B story comes from one of our ML team, the droll, affable Garth
House (yep, that is a compliment, Garth).  Garth tells of how he
entered an elevator with Mr. B and Carlton.  No-one speaks.  As
Garth is leaving, Carlton says “Mr. B likes your shirt”.  Guess Carlton
and Joe had a kind of telepathy going :)

    House of Puns
    [edited]

Last night’s ModCom Xmas party was hosted at an amazing house in Venice Beach. We didn’t personally know anyone from this committee, but we wanted to see the amazing mansion that our friends had been raving about. The house is like a Disneylandish “House of Puns” – surreal in sensibility – where every extraordinary room, piece of furniture and decorative object is literally, a play on words.

Example: the couch that is embedded inside a potato. (Couch Potato) The corridors of hanging instruments withbuttons that you push to play sounds from the instruments. (Wall of Sound) A doorknocker with the word “Opportunity” above it. A dispenser of Complimentary Cashew Nuts that speaks to the guest: “You are gorgeous”. Yeah, most of it was crazy silly, but fun.

So this morning I googled Gary Shafner’s house and  was surprised to find only ONE article on it. And what? No pictures on the internet? Via this link, the article:

Gary Shafner … A Personal Odyssey
Iwas very fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the home of GaryShafner on both the Venice Garden Tour and the Venice Art Walk. What anincredible experience! It is probably one of the most unique residencesin the world.

You wonder what kind of person could create thiskind of environment. Gary claims he’s not artistic. “I’m okay on thecreative side as far as thinking of things,” he says. “You think aboutthe space you’re in. It just came out of me.”

First, it is astory about space. You have to understand that the home currentlyconsists of three originally separate buildings that were made up of 2- 4 units. Most walls came down to open up the interior and others wereconstructed to continue the flow. The set up is more unusual becausethere is a fourth structure, not owned by Gary, in between.

Then,it’s about what goes in the space. “As I got a little money I startedfixing things up here and there,” says Gary. “People would look at whatI was doing and say ‘that’s really weird’.” Weird or not, there isplenty to marvel at.

Even the exterior gives a sense that you’rein for some surprises. It appears that there are four units becausethere are four doors. You wouldn’t know which door to enter. It’s agood thing that there is an intercom for entry and you are let in. But,guess what? Only one door works! The others are there to fool us.

Youreally know you’re in for an unusual experience when you enter intowhat would normally be the foyer or entryway. Here, you are greeted byseveral of Gary’s collections. Your eye is drawn to the three cars …such as you would see in a car showroom. There is a 1962 Goggomobile, a1958 Dual Ghia (a prototype made for auto shows … only 100manufactured) and an Edsel (front) Ranchero (back) that was neverbuilt. There are three beautiful guitars displayed on the wall. “Theysignify something,” says Gary. “I like music a lot.” There is a watchcollection in a case that was purchased from a pharmacy in New Yorkthat had been in business for 90 years. The building was being torndown. “I recycle,” says Gary. Most are retirement watches withinscriptions on the back. Others have something on the base like a Dr.Pepper or NCAA basketball tournament logo. “I collect weird watches,”he adds. In a weirder vein is the “Fish Market” … an aquarium withlive fish that will soon have plastic fish on ice with prices on themlike you would see in a fish market.

There is a map of SouthernCalifornia and an “Entering California” greeting on the cement floor asyou enter the next room. It could be the “entertainment” room in morethan one way. There are two ATM machines. If you press buttons on one, different artwork will appear in the frames on the wall. If you pressbuttons on the other, you currently have a choice of 70,000 songs (andbuilding) from the mp3 jukebox. “New technology is fun,” says Gary. There is an eight-foot long coffee table/fire pit with sand that lightsup. “The fire dances on the sand,” says Gary. “It has a great effect atnight.” Now get this. “Mickey” is etched on the “mantle” and “toupee”is woven in the area “rug”. Both of these brought forth “aha” moments. Here’s something else. What would you do if you were visiting a friend, asked to use the bathroom and was shown a bathroom with a window? Wouldyou freak out? “I call it my ‘David Lynch’ bathroom,” Gary says. Thephotosensitive glass becomes opaque when the light switch is hit.Surprise!

I love “Barney’s Venice”. This is Gary’s clothescloset … actually a room that looks like you’re shopping in a store.Shirts, sweaters, jackets and shoes are displayed against the wall. There is a display case with ties. The fixtures were purchased from amen’s store that closed. There is also a built-in laundry hamper. “I’mbasically a slob,” says Gary. “The closet forces me to be neat becausethere’s a big window and I walk by it all the time.”

The kitchenis located in the space that was the one bedroom cottage that Garyfirst rented. You think you’re in a coffee shop. There is a displaycase with cakes and pies (fake), a vinyl booth and a jukebox that Garybought when he was 18. There is also a glass door refrigerator that waspurchased over 20 years ago. “I’ve had it rebuilt four times,” Garysays. Any chef in the world would be envious of this kitchen! There isa regular oven, wood burning oven, tandori oven, smoker (for meat orfish), confection oven, wok, salamander (to char meat or melt cheese)and hot air cooker (for French fries). “I like to eat and I like tocook,” Gary says. “An industrial kitchen makes it easier to cook. Youare dealing with better degrees of heat.”

I asked Gary which onewas his favorite room. He replied, “what ever I just did”. That wouldbe his home office. It is a second story open space that has a circularatrium library. This is no ordinary library. There are secret panelsleading to a bathroom, storage room and balcony. One panel will soonopen up to a Murphy bed. His desk and table are custom made to looklike huge books. The onyx panels on either side of the stairway wereinspired by lit onyx designed by Frank Gehry. Gary tried to match it upon a panel surrounding the atrium but discovered that onyx couldn’t becut that way. He took a picture of the original and transferred it bycomputer to film that back lights. “It looks like marble at night,” hesays. “I’m now trying to figure out how to build a clock for the upperpart … like an electric train running around.” The revolving windowsare amazing. “I really lucked out,” says Gary. “I wanted to put thewindows on a pivot. They weren’t measured to turn at a 360 degree anglebut it worked.” The windows revolve when there’s a breeze.

Oops!!I’m reaching my self-imposed two-page limit for the feature article. There’s a lot more to tell you about … the roof top camping area, theinterior gas station, the bathroom with at least 50 bottles of shampoo, the 30-foot bar from Chicago, the “butt” end tables. But, oh, I can’thelp myself. Just one more. On the way out, you encounter a warning …”Enter At Your Own Risk” … before going outside into the “realworld”.

Hopefully Gary will be gracious again next year andopen his home to the public to benefit Venice’s social services so youcan experience his unique environment for yourself. It may not be thesame … as his home is a work in progress. “I’ll probably die beforeit’s ever finished,” he says.

Yes, I hope that Mr. Shafner will host another party because there was so much stuff I missed!

    Los Campeones Update

Due to the complicated paperwork and requirements related to the Screen Actors Guild, our voice recording session has been delayed which in turn has delayed the rest of the production. Well, at least we now have the first draft of the movie’s storyboardscompleted… yay! And we will be working through Christmas…

Currently listening to: Otis Fodder’s fabulously fun Xmas mixes.

  • A recent email from Eddie
came with an mp3 attachment: the original version of “Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport” by the man who brought us the stylophone -

A pleasant little song for a Sunday evening. It has Australia‘s contribution to World Music — the wobble board — and the racially charged line ‘let me abos go loose…’ – Eddie

VERY coincidentally, two days later… Rolf apologizes.

P.S. For American readers: the term “abo” in Australia is equivalent to the “N” word in the USA.

    Happy Post-Thanksgiving!
A brief update: We are thrilled that Bardel (Vancouver) will be doing the Flash animation on Los Campeones. We’re also happy to have Phofo on board as our music director and music licensing person. In fact, we are VERY EXCITED about the soundtrack possibilities… Think 60′s Mexicano rock and roll, psychobilly, and beats!

This Friday 8pm, join us at Secret Headquarters for the launch of Rafael Navarro‘s new book – LUCHA NOIR, published by Unknown Publications. I am getting my copy at the store, but you can also buy it online here. (Rafael is a storyboard artist on Los Campeones)

    Links of the week:

    Mondo Morricone (+ downloads!)

All the James Bond movie opening titles

Cool Flickr stuff: Edit your photos ONLINE with Preloadr; Print photo books with Qoop; or mini cards with Moo. I have just received my batch of Qoop photo books (xmas gift for friend) and they are very cool!

Currently watching: Operation Kid Brother aka OK Connery. An Italian 007 spoof movie starring Neil Connery! (Sean’s brother, that is) Leonard Maltin gives it 1/2 a star, and it’s a pretty bad movie. So bad it’s fun.

    Presenting: OPERATION KID BROTHER/OK CONNERY

  • “The Nail In The Coffin”
…characters from Los Campeones’ nightclub sequence

These are some of the characters at the nightclub where DRAGON ROJO JR. and MR. PROFESIONAL meet up with RAYO X. (One of these days we will get a proper Los Campeones website together so you know who’s who and what’s what)

Meanwhile, things are moving ahead even though we have had several weeks tearing our hair out over the piles of Screen Actors Guild paperwork we were required to fill out. Something that we hadn’t anticipated: One has to pay S.A.G. ($$$) for using non-S.A.G. actors…

Yes, we have our Los Campeones cast! We feel very blessed to have the enthusiasm of some very cool (and famous) talent on our “low-budget-indie-feature”. Stay tuned… All will be revealed later…

     Fancy X-mas giftshopping ideas

    The “Puro Muerto” Exhibition

at the L. A. Central Library until March 2007 is worth checking out. A book has been published of these Day of the Dead artworks, but the gallery experience is much more impressive! Really cool woodcut prints, paintings and sculptures by Artemio Rodriguez, Robert Palacios and other La Mano Press artists.

  • I know we don’t blog much these days and it’s due to this heavy Los Campeones workload, overseas travel and lack of time when you add domestic chores and personal lives to the mix. I rarely participate on the internet these days… well, aside from occasional Myspace and eBay visits. So these tidbitty updates may have to last for a while…

    Los Campeones

Storyboards by Eddie, Jake Bauming and Rafael Navarro are in progress and looking awesome! We have also been in the process of auditioning voice actors and educating ourselves on SAG (Screen Actors Guild) requirements. This being our first US-based “independent movie” production as Fwak! Animation USA, LLC there is some learning to do and challenges to meet.

    Overseas Travel

I was in Sydney and Malaysia a little while ago with alas, no fabulous photos and travel tips to share. It was wonderful catching up with old friends and family, eating great meals but and I didn’t really do anything super-bloggable otherwise. Stuff bought included some dried meat (an addictive Malaysian Chinese specialty), Tim Tams (Australian specialty) and this record I found at a flea market. The concept is so bad it’s good.

    Was ‘suburban’ ever cool?

Tomorrow, Eddie leaves for Sydney. Jazzy, my foster dog,  will miss him.

    *UPDATE*
Eddie is keeping a Sydney travel blog on Myspace
    HERE
And this is what a real cappuccino looks like…

Here is the confirmed release date for the Ginchy mimobots (USB memory drives) that I designed a few months ago: Thursday night, October 26th. @ Munky King Melrose. Brian McCarty will be showing his photos and me, a few illustrations, with DJ Phofo spinning tracks. Hope you can make it! Click here for more details on the event.

    Hope to see you there!

    Halloween/Dia De Los Muertos

On Nov 28th. we will be heading over to Hollywood Forever Cemetary for the annual L.A. Day of the Dead celebrations. The more I hear about Keith Rainville‘s elaborate tribute altar to departed luchadores, the more I can’t wait to see it!! The Cramps & Groovie Ghoulies (both of whom we had the pleasure of meeting recently) will also be playing at the House of Blues on the same night and I think I have to get some of these Vosges exotic chocolate skulls even though they’re eight bucks(!) each.
