  • Rikochet Goes to West Hollywood*…twice!

Seriously now, it’s not what you think!

These are stills from brand new Season 3 ML episodes. The top pic is from episode titled: “The Incredible Penny Plutonium” where a ‘grown-up Rikochet’ manifests himself inside Penny’s momentarily-deranged brain. The second pic is from “Shamrock and Roll”. Rikochet wrestles Rick O’Shea at the end of the rainbow. Get it?

    * Substitute for ‘Darlinghurst’ in Sydney. *OR NEWTOWN of course!

  • Masked-wrestler inspired figures are popping up everywhere! Last week, we blogged about the new El Dunny Loco figure by Kidrobot. While I’m not a huge fan of  Toy2R‘s QEE figures, I have just noticed that they have some Japanese pro-wrestler Qees. Though a bit hard to tell that these are masked wrestlers if you weren’t already familiar with the wrestlers…

The above images are from myplasticheart.com. (We saw Ebessan wrestle in L.A. earlier this year!) I think I still prefer my Tiger Mask KUBRICK wrestler set.

Which reminds me - while we were in NYC, we also came across some New Japan Pro-Wrestling TINIBIZ figures - most of which are pretty boring visually. We just wanted the Jushin Thunder Lyger figure! Sometimes, ‘blind assortment’ really sucks!

September 8th: Kaiju Big Battel is coming to L.A. !

Unfortunately this event clashes with “John K. Presents Classic Cartoons”  at the Egyptian Theater, which we were looking forward to. Guess we’ll have to miss out this time  The monster-suited mayhem wins!

  • El Santo Animated?

Blue Demon Jr & El Hijo Del Santo
    (image from
    Blue Demon’s website-gallery)

I was under the belief that the rivalry between ‘El Hijo del Santo and Blue Demon Jr’  was just a work…ie, not real… but according to Chris A. who is Blue Demon’s good friend, these two Mexican wrestling superstars are seriously fighting and have been for a while. It seems that Blue Demon Jr’s involvement with Mucha Lucha as an animated character has pissed El Santo off. And now it has been reported that Santo is keen to be in an animated series of his own!

Is this for real? The only article I could find is in Spanish – El Santo vs Blue Demon, Otra Vez. (requires registration to Economista.com.mx; or you could use my USERNAME – lilichin  PASSWORD – muchalucha).

Based on my limited translation skills (and with help from Tony) – El Hijo del Santo wants to star in 3-minute animated episodes in the same format as Cartoon Network’s Clone Wars. The article also says that this Santo animated series will go to air at the end of the year!

Who is producing this? Is it really happening? (What have we started?!!) Or is this pure hype that is part of the off-ring rivalry between the two lucha legends?

P.S. In the article, Blue Demon says that he was very nervous during the ML recording, but  that it was a gratifying experience.

P.P.S.  Fans of ML have asked us why El Santo doesn’t guest-star in ML. In actual fact, we were planning to contact El Santo, but Blue Demon’s people contacted us first. Should there be a fourth season of ML, we would love to have Santo on the show. But… will Blue Demon Jr still be our friend?

Other stuff - Super busy these next few days. I am organizing ML images for WB’s new style guide; and I have a big long list of design-revisions to do for our Jive Turkey Experience bible. So much to do…

Check out these Fosters’ promotional toys! (Our friend in NYC works for a cable TV magazine & gets sent all kinds of cool stuff.)

The gorgeous figurines come in a gorgeous box. Cartoon Network really knows how to market their stuff! While in NYC we also saw lots of huge billboards advertising this new series.

  • Fwak Gets Political! - by Eddie

Our flight on JetBlue from NYC to LA not only had WiFi (in the JFK terminal, and FREE, much to Miss Chin’s delight) but also satellite TV.

To my surprise I watched on CNN as they crossed to George W. Bush signing the Free Trade Agreement with Australia. “This signals great trade opportunities for the Pacific Rim” gushed the CNN reporter.

Whoops! Guess they aren’t informed enough to know that Australia has a Parliament, and that this piece of legislation is going through an intense debate between the conservative government and Labor opposition. Nothing is signed from the Australian end. On the contrary…this document for “great trade opportunities” is shaping up as a possible election trigger. (Sydney Morning Herald:
    Even a Trade-Off Agreement Unlikely)

If this little fact escaped CNN then I’m damn sure they know nothing of what the Free Trade Agreement contains. The most relevant part for our industry is the basic de-regulation of Australian content laws, and is another erosion of any protection the Australian entertainment industry has. More informed people know more about this than I do…my main beef is that the US – and the Murdoch press in Australia for that matter – have reported this as a done deal.

Thankfully we now have an opposition in Australia to make sure these done deals don’t happen with the regularity they have, over the last decade.

So much for CNN…I happily flipped back to
Boomerang knowing I’d be just as informed.

  • Day 4 in the Big Apple. It’s 5.00pm and we’re resting our weary feet back at the apartment…

    Chelsea Treasures

    The Bright Food Shop
The last time we were in NYC we fell in love with this Chelsea cafe-foodstore. Four years later, the place has changed. Gone are the the retro-diner vibe, the floral table coverings and the Mexican-rockabilly waiter who inspired an incidental character in Mucha Lucha (‘The Dogcatcher’ aka Esteban). The place looks more like a standard cafe now, but the food is still delicious. What they call ”Latin-Asian Fusion”. I had a “Smoked Salmon Maki” with salsa. Eddie’s “Mexican French Toast” was out of this world: fried tortillas with piloncillo, bananas and orange cream. Then we went next door to the foodstore and found some arty Loteria fridge magnets and $1.50 luchador yo-yos.

    Flea Markets
Wandering through several flea markets around 24th-25th streets, we came across a stall with Russian/Soviet memorabilia. We wanted to buy everything (from the Sputnik paperweight, to the drinking flasks and old tin alarm clocks) but we restrained ourselves. I got myself a winter hat, and Eddie found an antique lamp of the ‘Cosmonautics Monument’  which we actually drew in our Cosmic Baby pilot!

Heading back to the apartment in SoHo (via Williamsburg and Lafayette Street), we dropped by the Kid Robot store again – seeing that it was on the way, and Jack behind the counter asked me where I got my ML tshirt. Turns out that ML is one of his favorite cartoons and he’s a lucha libre fan too! (he has all the toys, and his gf is a Buena Girl fan) Jack showed us Kid Robot’s brand new DUNNY* figure – El Dunny Loco! - coming soon!

*I wonder what DUNNY means in the US, because in Australia it’s a slang word for toilet.

  • Coney Island Freakshow!

The Talker tries to entice potential marks…

Today we went to Coney Island and saw the “world’s last remaining carnival sideshow”. Photos weren’t allowed so we can only share the stuff on the outside; like the wonderful sideshow banner artwork (by Marie Roberts)…

If you’ve ever wondered what the Coney Island freakshow is like, here’s a quick breakdown of our experience.

    1. Tyler Fyre, the Human Blockhead - This guy is a natural performer. Brilliant! First he stuck a nail up his nostril; followed by a screwdriver. Then he slid a sword down his throat, followed by two swords, and finally a gladiator sword so thick and long that it would have reached down into his intestines.
    2. The Rubber Woman was next. She laid down inside a red box, and Tyler Fyre inserted 15 sharp blades (sort of diagonally) into the box from above. Then the audience had to donate extra money (of course!) to walk up and peer inside the box to see how her body was twisted up between the blades. Worth the extra money? “I could’ve done that” I said to Eddie. (…since I’m double-jointed) There was obviously a technique to how she positioned her body so that she could avoid the blades. But then, when the audience were back in their seats, Tyler opened the box and surprise surprise! the Rubber Woman emerged in a totally different position with her head on the opposite side of the box!
    3. Eak The Geek*/Illustrated Man. This Geek first appeared in a black wrestling mask (while Tyler Fyre announced him as being from the “wild streets of Mexico”), then stripped it off along with this shirt, to reveal a totally tattooed head and body. Seeing that we can’t have real sideshow geeks in this day and age with animal rights, Eak ‘mimed’ being a geek and described the whole process in glorious detail “the way he used to do it, seventy times or more”. This guy had a great villainous laugh. Then he laid himself down on a bed of nails; with another bed of nails (face down) on his belly and got three audience members to stand on it. * a Geek is a carnival sideshow performer who bites the heads off small animals and chickens.
    4. Electra sat in a high wooden chair with a big electrical switch. The gimmick was that she can conduct electricity. When the electricity was on, she squirmed and shook in the chair. Eak the Geek (these guys play several different roles) held a giant matchstick to her finger (then, her tongue) and the thing burst into flames.
    5. Then it was the Rubber Woman again – only this time she was Insectivora! She swallowed live crickets and centipedes! (yuck! Also made a point of chewing very loudly and having the worm-thing dangle from her mouth while she ate for extra effect!). Insectivora also walked up a ladder of sharp swords.
    6. Finally, Tyler Fyre reappeared with a fire-eating/breathing act.
    7. But that was not all! For another dollar, you could see the “Horrors of Drug Abuse – This Could Happen To You!” freakshow, hidden away in another room. OK, we wanted to see everything, so we forked out more money… what’s a few extra dollars for such very funny and dedicated performers. Turns out the “Horrors of Drug Abuse” were jars of preserved ‘fetuses’ – one had two heads. Uh… ok. (Which reminds me – we should check out that California Science show in L.A. which everyone raves about…)

So would we recommend going to the Coney Island Freakshow? Definitely YES! It’s a much more intimate and ‘old-school’ experience than the Jim Rose Circus, which I saw years and years ago when they toured Sydney. These Coney Island guys are such GREAT showpeople that even if you’re not into the freakish acts, you will be entertained!

Here’s a photo of me with Eak The Geek.

Eddie: Hey, he’s not totally tattooed…I spy an un-illustrated leg!
    I want my money back…

Eddie: The Coney Island Feak Show was a blast!  The artists were so into the whole ‘carny’ tradition, that the whole experience was more an example of performance art.  My favorite bit was after Eak The Geek had regaled us with his tales of geekery and savagery…then told us all that we should register, and make sure we vote!  Classic!  A carny with a moral side…

Coney Island is such a great experience.  Everything from the amusements to the advertisements is such a throwback to another time.  And the place was packed!  Seems there’s still an audience for old fashioned sideshows in this day and age.

It was still very warm and humid and by the end of the afternoon we were feeling exhausted and grimey.

    Tomorrow: Possibly Chelsea and Harlem.

Thanks to John and Bee for a very nice dinner at Churrascaria tonight. It was great to meet you guys and finally put real faces to names Best wishes to xanga.com without which, life on the internet would be less enjoyable.
