We arrived late at tonight’s L.A. premiere of The Animation Show 2005 (where does one park around the Nu-Art Theatre?), so it’s a shame we missed a couple of the earlier shorts. We managed to catch the later part of Bill Plympton’s Guard Dog - hilarious!; which was followed by a very inspiring and interesting range of shorts in different media/styles.
Don Hertzfeldt’s quirky Meaning of Life took FOUR years to produce with no computers (!) – pretty crazy. One of my favourites was Australian Jonathan Nix’s Hello - a really simple yet clever and quirky story about a Cassettedeck boy who finds true love with a CD Walkman girl.
One thing all these diverse films had in common, was the reliance on strong visual storytelling, as opposed to the snappy, dialogue-heavy scripts we’re used to in the TV/Film industry. Go see The Animation Show and support independent animation!

i saw Nix’s Hello at an outdoor annual film festival here in town a couple of years ago. E. and I were stunned… the audience of course got to vote on their fave… it was mine by far. he has other stuff on his website too. http://www.studionix.com/ & a decent interview w/links on him here: http://www.sleepybrain.net/nix.html
oops… was reading from subs and didn’t see you already linked his site… doh!
Sounds like a great evening! Thanks for keeping those who live in far off lands (i.e. Texas) in on all the fun.:)
The Animation Show is being distributed to theatres around the country just like a regular movie…I’m sure it will hit Texas. -Eddie
You’re right Eddie. I just checked the site and it WILL be coming to Austin, with Don Hertzfeldt in attendence. Joy! Thanks for setting me straight.
