    Cantinflas! - Eddie

I was pleased to hear about the Cantinflas cartoon show being available on DVD, as it’s something I’ve always wanted to see – especially since finding a picture book based on the series, at a market in Mexico City, a few years back.

The shorts on the DVDs have been grouped in subject matter.  The one I bought was titled ‘Deportes’ (Sport).

The first three shorts (Toros, Futbol and Boxeo) look great; the design is very reminiscent of the early DePatie/Freling Pink Panther cartoons – although I actually prefer the character design in the Cantinflas shorts.  There’s a real rough, sketchy quality to the linework (it almost looks like it could have been drawn directly onto cel), and the animation is nice and fluid.

Then suddenly, it all turns to crap.  It’s as if somebody hired Filmation to produce the later series.  All the groovy, stylized character design, look and feel is gone, replaced by a hacked out generic approach that makes Gilligan’s Planet look appealing.

Ah well, the first three cartoons are worth the price of the DVD alone…I’m willing to take a chance on more DVDs in the series, just to see the style of the earlier shorts.

  • my daughter collected pogs as a kid.
are the items shown for sale?  what is ‘swag’?  some very cool stuff.
and oh my! she is very nekkid!!

  • hi Stevie – the tazos/pogs come with Doritos, Cheetos, and other chips sold in mexico. We’re not sure if they’re in the US. ‘Swag’ just refers to general merchandise, in this case :)

  • Gob bless the consumer of those cheetos! He or She EARNED those pogs. I’ve never heard of Cantinflas but I’m going to have to check it out. Thanks!

  • jchap, the real Cantinflas was a HUGE comedy star in Mexico – and made countless films over a lot of years.  Actually, if anyone is interested in ordering the DVDs, two notes of caution:
1)They’re in Spanish with no subtitles 2) Cantinflas’ live action films also have cartoon covers.  Make sure you know what DVD you’re getting.  The cartoon DVDs are called ‘Cantinflas Show’  -Eddie
