  • Happy Halloween!

Halloween isn’t celebrated in Australia (no trick or treatin’, no dressing-up etc.)So this is a totally brand new experience for us and we’ll be joining the hordes tonight to check out the Halloween Carnaval in West Hollywood. I imagine it’s like the Sydney Mardi Gras but a gazillion times bigger and crazier.

Curiously, Halloween is not a public holiday here, and it should be! Here are two board artists who won’t be doing much work today…

    Awesome costumes
Greg Colton & Ricky Garduno (with partner, Lily)

Eddie: WB Animation celebrated Halloween in fine style this morning in the multi-purpose room, with food, music and a costume contest!  I think ‘Mohammed’s Wife’ won (don’t ask…).

Good to see our Mucha Lucha master board astists, Mssrs. Colton and Garduno get into the spirit.  Hey who knows – maybe by next year even Lili and I may give this Halloween thing a try – a masked medico and nurse, maybe..?

P.S. More photos have been added to the LA Pics Album

  • We’re in Animation Blast!

www.animationblast.com - A big thank you to Amid Amidi. We are very surprised and honored.

My first reaction when Eddie showed me the blurb was “Oh shit”. (P.S. we don’t use the expression: ”Crikey!”) Now the American animation community is going to read about the cheezy and oftentimes inane experiences of two Australians in Hollywood. Now we gotta be extra careful what and who we write about …

One thing to keep in mind is that we, Fwak, always endeavour to remain *positive* and *cheerful* about our industry experiences on this blog. There is already enough negative ranty stuff out there. Our aim is to report the good stuff, the fun stuff, and keep our Australian friends updated on how cool it is to be in L.A. and working where we are – doing our bit for ¡Mucha Lucha!.

Which reminds me… the website desperately needs updating… This will happen when time permits. In the meantime, stay tuned to this Fwak! Blog for news and updates

    *updated with pics!

    Lucha Va Voom!

This was our first ever Lucha Va Voom experience - the Halloween Espectacular! Eddie and I were seated ringside with Jorge, Sandra and Joel, so we had great company and the view was awesome. A quick summary:

    • The burlesque was fun but we wanted more lucha! The intermission came fast, and before you knew it, the whole thing was over. I guess we’re just so used to 3-fall Mexican matches…
    • The opening match was hilarious! We saw the ”Chickens” (Los Gallineros) vs The Hombre Lobo (Wolfman), The Momia de Guanajuato (Mummy) & El Marciano (The Martian).
    • The Minis (midget wrestlers) were the highlight! Tzuki, who must have been all of three feet tall, was amazing. With his tag team partner La Parkita, he defeated the ruditos – Espectrito (the one with the mullet) and Guerrerito del Futuro – with agility and speed.
    • The referee – El Indio - had an awesome wig.
    • Mr. Unknown - masked commentator, was heard saying: “… has just taken out the Mucha Lucha crew!” (… when a wrestler landed on our chairs)
    • The gringo commentators were entertaining but a little annoying, often making jokes at the expense of the Mexican wrestlers like they were some kind of circus freakshow.
    • As for the main event… Mil Mascaras is a legend of Lucha Libre but the guy is over sixty! And it showed. The other wrestlers were obviously restricted in their movements because they were so conscious they were working with an old man… We all felt sorry for him.

All in all a FUN night. And I took some videoclips with my little camera. Too many big files to upload, but here’s a good one: Tzuki in action (.avi format, 3 MB)

The next Lucha Va Voom is Feb 12th 2004. And Liz, the promoter, tells me – it’s definitely going to be on TV!

    El Hombre Lobo (wolfman)

Frankenstein and Kitten de Ville (burlesque damsel)

The Mummy pins a Chicken (Wolfman & Martian at the back)

Tzuki on the ropes, and that’s the butt of Guerririto (I think)

    El Guerrerito & La Parkita

Too much fun! – Eddie, Lili & Sandra

Thank you, Joel for the photos!

  • Lucha – The Next Big Thing?

    • Eddie has received an email from Mike Tenay! (not saying any more for now )
    • We (and Keith) did a ‘Lucha Libre’ interview with a documentary-filmmaker last night. Talked about how we both got into lucha, the vids, magazines and events that inspired us; a bit about the birth of ML and the infamous RBN.
    • In the meantime we know of at least three other people who are currently developing lucha-focused TV shows/films.
    • Time Magazine says it’s the next big thing and word on the street is that Liz’s and Rita’s Lucha Va Voom  (which is on tomorrow night at The Mayan) could be going into development as a TV series!
    • Rafael’s Sonambulo could be going into development as a feature film!
    • And here’s something I’m really looking forward to… The Mucha Lucha toys will be released early next year (Jan-Feb) at the New York Toy Fair! Eddie and I will be making sure that we get our asses over there

    Whinge…

There is nothing more frustrating than computer/internet-related problems when you spend as much time on the web as I do. Right now:

    • I can’t log into my Typepad account to post more pictures to the LA album. I keep getting an error message.
    • I can’t upload files to our website (or edit anything) because something screwy is going on with Telstra Bigpond, our ISP/Webhosting service and has been for weeks now.
    • My customized Mail2Web account won’t let me send emails. Inexplicable error message… This isn’t happening to Eddie. Just me.

  • Random …

    Lili: – THE CLAMATO
Today at the supermarket my curiosity could take it no longer. I bought a bottle of  Clamato  and tasted it for the first time. The Clamato is another bizzare American invention: tomato juice mixed with clam juice. yes. CLAM JUICE. It sounds positively gross but really, the salty component doesn’t register as clam… unless you pause to think about it.
Read this story of the Clamato … My sentiments exactly! Now all we need is a dash of vodka to make it a Bloody Clamato Mary.

    Eddie: – LOS ANGELES 2003 1983
One thing that strikes me about LA, is the city’s current love affair with the 1980′s.  Seriously, 80′s music is everywhere – even the current fascination with Electroclash  bears this out.  We stumbled into The Lounge at The Standard Hotel on Sunset (a producer friend from Sydney was staying there) and our ears were assaulted with everything from ABC to Trio (remember ‘Da Da Da’?).  And Falco.  Aaaarg!!!  Falco!?!? Then Men At Work came on.  Cheezus!  And people ask me why I’ve never become an Australian citizen…

So we got outta there, pronto, and headed for the congested, yet comforting surrounding of the Tiki Ti, where we took comfort in our Chi Chis and Kactus Kulas.  It did, however lead me to seek an explanation for the current affection for ’80′s music and fashion.

If memory serves me correctly, America spent most of the eighties clinging to the seventies.  Most of what the rest of the world was listening to, probably didn’t make it to mainstream US radio.  Am I right?  Anyone out there remember Trio and Talk Talk the first time ’round?  Currently everything that’s a little bit of a fashion risk, or a little left of centre is being labelled ”eighties”.  This was brought home to me today, while I was in a clothes shop in Silverlake.  As I was admiring this very cool, very Mod pinstriped suit (Hey, I got a wedding to go to!), the sales assistant (who must have been all of 18) said: “Yeah this is a really eighties suit – I can imagine Johnny Rotten wearing one just like it…”

Okay, this statement was just SO wrong on SO many levels, and illustrates why no one under 23 should ever be allowed to work in retail under any circumstances, but it did help to illustrate the current obsession with that tacky little decade we all went through, last century…

  • Another TOY blog…

We were at Keith‘s apartment Tuesday night to pick up a TV that he has so kindly lent us. I couldn’t resist taking photos of his lucha toy collection. And there’s plenty more than this!

We’ve been thinking about toys forever and have so many unanswered questions.  Why are there no luchador kubricks or vinyl figures? Wouldn’t it be cool to get our OWN lucha libre figurines out there? How does one make this dream a reality?

    Fwak! Toy Story so far…

Those who know me know that I’ve been wanting to get figurines made of our characters ever since I discovered vinyl figures. This is a side project and mission which I’m researching and keen to learn more about. The main challenges are finding licensing contacts and knowing how to finance the design/production of prototypes.

The figures above of Cosmic Baby, El Bastardo and Super Mahi Tiki were made by Paul Wright, a sculptor friend. (There are only 3 of these and they are not the final approved prototype designs.)

So where to go from here? If you are a vinyl figure savvy 3D-modeller or sculptor who can help us take our character designs to toy-production level, I’d like to discuss. Please email me!

On Saturday, November 8, Kids’ WB! welcomes the fastest mouse in all of Mexico, Speedy Gonzales, to Saturday morning as he makes a special guest-appearance on ¡Mucha Lucha! (10:30 a.m. ET). Don’t miss this original Looney Tunes character when he comes face-to-face with our three mascaritas.

The episode is titled “Lucha Rinse Repeat” and Speedy makes a brief cameo appearance. This is a cool episode written by Peter Hastings, boards by Ricky Garduno, great animation by Bardel.

We’ll be flying out of L.A. on the 4th. so will miss this episode… and also the Mary Blair Presentation on November 7th. Oh well…

  • Janet Klein & FPU

We had dinner tonight with Keith and Christa at the Pig and Whistle on Hollywood Blvd. Keith & Christa are the original members of the From Parts Unknown team - writers of the very first US-based English-language Lucha Libre magazine that ever existed, long before lucha became a mainstream fad (as it is now). Keith is still self-publishing the magazine; Christa has just written a novel with masked wrestlers in it. Of course!

What a cool evening. The food was great and there were oldtime jazz performances including the person we all came to see: Janet Klein a ukelele chanteuse who does obscure and saucy 20‘s melodies. Christa calls her the “world’s cutest human being”, and this is almost true. Janet Klein does sort of resemble Betty Boop with her 20′s garb, mannerisms and voice.

Issue #7 Cover image © From Parts Unknown

The final treat of the evening was getting a copy of FPU #7 from Keith.

The Back From the Dead Issue – is dedicated entirely to skeleton and bone-suited masked wrestlers! The main feature on La Parka is followed by a look at similarly themed grapplers throughout history. From there we hop the globe to cover every boner we could find, Japan’s “Shockers” to Italy’s “Kriminal”, Turkey’s “Kilink” and even Britain’s Romney rogues and scarecrows. AND, the FPU offices are invaded by curvaceous cat burgling cadaver “Skeletura Satanic” – a Stacked Grappler with a bone to pick of her own! - FPU

    Eddie says:

It’s not until you start reading From Parts Unknown #7 – Back From The Dead, that you realise how much you’ve missed this ornery bastard hybrid of Lucha Libre/Popular Culture, and how much the world needs it.

Published by Keith J. Rainville, with text by Mr.Unknown (when WILL we finally meet that guy? ), despite the scaling down due to budgetry reasons (we guess), three things just leap out immediately and grab you: The Writing – which is just so smart-ass clever; The Research – which is just amazingly insightful and in depth (How in depth you ask?  Well, in researching the history of skeleton-themed heroes and villains throughout celluloid history, the article even covers Dr.Syn - a 1930′s British movie!  Dr. freakin’ Syn – Jesus!).  And lastly The Passion, which comes through with every page.

My only fear is that by scaling the mag down size-wise, FPU may get overlooked, and lumbered in with all the inferior fanzines out there, of which it is not.  If ever a magazine needed to be big, glossy and on every coffee table across the country, it’s this one.

I rank this one right up there alongside the Bad Doctor issue.  How can you go wrong with Masks, Muertos and Mexican Monstruos?  Order it HERE!

  • More sights and tastes:

    • Friday night: Dinner with Christy(creator of Xiaolin Showdown) Rosy and Joel at a Yakitori restaurant in Sawtelle.
    • Home Depot for cacti; Fairfax markets for vinyl, and Urban Outfitters for two dish chairs.

    • Lunch with Jorge and Sandra at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles (Pico/La Brea) Now, this place is totally bizarre. I like waffles, I like chicken. But waffles with whipped cream & syrup with fried chicken, onions and gravy combined?  Definitely a unique gastronomic experience… and one that stays with you in your intestines for the rest of the week
    • Dinner with Joel at Sushi Mac (Ventura Blvd). Too much food again! Watched Battle Royale on DVD. Great concept and the first half was awesome… but we were compelled to read the Spoilers FAQ straight after the movie to figure out the ending…
    • And to top it all off, tonight we had dinner with Christopher & Amy at Delmonico’s Lobster House (Ventura Blvd, Encino)… lobster tail with loads of creamy butter, mashed potatoes, and steak …
    • Tomorrow night is at the Pig and Whistle (Hollywood) with Keith & Christa. Hopefully our tummies won’t be stretchin’ too much further…

  • SOME PLACES WE WANT TO CHECK OUT:

    • Oceanic Arts in Whittier. They supply hotels, bars and Disneyland’s Adventureland with tiki masks, poles and Polynesian props. Maybe we can get something for our apartment…
    • Tonga Hut, North Hollywood. LA Weekly votes this as the best tiki bar in L.A. If it’s better than Tiki-ti, we gotta go!
    • Mao’s Kitchen, Venice. A Maoist-themed chinese restaurant? How can we resist? L.A. Weekly’s review:

It’s Chinese Communist cooking just like the re-education camp used to make. People’s Party propaganda posters emblazon the red-brick walls. The menu features dishes such as Model Citizen Noodle Soup and Long March Camp-Fry. Long wooden tables and benches hammered out of 2-by-4s welcome the weary bottoms of workers fresh from grueling labor. And the takeout slogan, “Mao’s delivers to the masses,” reminds us that there are a lot of people out there who like Chinese food better than they like hard benches. The owner collected the souvenirs that now hang like museum pieces on the walls of his restaurant when he was a child during the People’s Revolution. Needless to say, the food is always fresh, sans MSG and served in heaping portions. Mao wouldn’t have had it any other way. 1512 Pacific Ave., Venice, (310) 581-8305.

    * We’ve moved into our apartment!
