  • Bakshi’s latest film

The above pics images from Ralph Bakshi’s latest production – Last Days of Coney Island - were found via this post at the Ralph Bakshi discussion forums.

    Bakshi: “I
am now started with what could be my last feature called Last Days at
Coney Island which I have designed, written and directed. I’ve hired 2
animators – more about them later – and have recorded the first 10
minutes. It’s extremely strange – even for me. Hopefully I can finish
this – it’s extremely low budget which allows me the freedom I want.
It’s only in low budget that the big shots don’t care what you’re
doing. Low budget does not mean bad film. It forces you to make the
    film very direct.”

Right on. Should we look at our small budgets/crews and shake our heads, Bakshi’s attitude towards filmmaking always inspires and motivates!

On a sidenote, we have been receiving email requests for a repost of Scatman Crothers’ “Ahm a Niggerman” on this previous blog entry. Done! You can now download it HERE.

  • There was a funny rumor floating around my alma mater about him… Supposedly he was fired for making his students do scenes for his feature. In class. For free. There’s low budget for ya.

  • I’ll have to refute that rumor since I was at SVA during the Ralph years and sat in on all of his classes. The truth is there was discussion of starting a program similar to what you described somehow, but I can’t see how it would work because there aren’t any precedents that I can think of. I mean plenty of people have worked for free to gain pro experience, but paying to work on a movie (attending college class where you do pro work) sounds like it could never work out. It never happened and Ralph wasn’t fired for any reason that I am aware of. As far as I know he left when some of his projects started heating up and he was also preparing a major cross-country move.

  • Man, I’m so happy to read about this new feature.  If we weren’t so slammed making ‘Los Campeones’ we’d be on his doorstep offering our services.
    Go Ralph, go!

  • Yah, it circulated with a hefty dose of skepticism and we were pretty sure it wasn’t true. He swung by a couple times and was a really nice guy towards us newbies.I’m psyched for his film!
