Monkey King Animated
One of the reasons Eddie and I are in Sydney is to collect stuff from our studio and bring them back to L.A. (our new working base). For example, our animation hole-punch, software, early artwork and reference books.
One very cool book we have here is “Havoc In Heaven: Adventures of the Monkey King” with stunning images from the Shanghai animated film, which was shown at one of the Sydney Asia-Pacific Film Festivals a couple of years ago…

wow i never knew the reference! cool!
This film is definitely the most visually stunning animated version (sorry, Tezuka!). I’m currently going through a Monkey King obsession. The most recent well known adaption is the Japanese TV series ‘Monkey’ from the late 80′s. It borrowed a lot of its style and look from the Shaw Bros’ 1966 Hong Kong version ‘The Monkey Goes West’. Then there’s the early 90′s Stephen Chow take, ‘A Chinese Odyssey’. Hmmm…think we need to do another Monkey post
Oops…I meant to say the Japanese Monkey series was from the late 70′s!
I’ve watched this Monkey King cartoon before on TV in Singapore!
really classic stuff!
The cartoon just came out in a 40th anniversary DVD. Did ya get it?
Lili’s ordered it!
