Flickr: A very cool place to host/share images. From what I can see, Flickr seems to be to hobbyist photographers/artists/designers, what myspace* is to indie musicians or people seeking cool new music. There are thousands of themed photo-sharing groups here. I haven’t been browsing the site for very long, but so far these are some favourite pools: Kitsch Itch, Mexicanos, The Secret Life of Toys.

YouSendIt: The site is designed for emailing large files (up to 1GB) but also doubles as a convenient way to share music or video files via your blog if you don’t want to use your own webserver. Files are hosted for seven days or the first 25 downloads. (Examples: Spread the Good Word & Blow-up Doll MP3 blogs)

  • Back from the Toy Fair – Lili

My first Toy Fair, my first experience of New York in winter…   It has been a jam-packed and tiring two days but all completely worth it. I had a blast meeting and hanging out with the creme de la creme of ‘boutique toy’ artists and distributors, whom I have to thank Brian for introducing me to.

The New York Toy Fair is similar to San Diego Comic Con in its overwhelming scale, but located in two separate buildings: The Jacob Javitts Center (West side) and the Toy Center (Broadway, 5th Ave). Due to time constraints I didn’t make it to the Toy Center where you had to schedule appointments to view the products (eg, Jakks Pacific, Hasbro etc.) I spent most of my time wandering through the hot and crowded Javitts Center, with very sore feet…

    Highlights
    (with lots of namedropping)

SNOWFALL! Not ever having experienced snow (at least not since Perisher Blue in 1990) I was like a crazy tourist, taking photos of anything and everything with white stuff on it. I could have stayed outdoors all night if I had not been so exhausted…  Well, you know, I’m from the tropics so snow is a novelty :)

    Outside Botanica on Houston

Dinner with Mike and Heather at Calle Ocho, an amazing Cuban restaurant on the Upper West Side. The food and cocktails were to die for! Which was followed by coffee and desserts at Cafe Lalo. Mike and Heather are the very cool owners of Wootini, and I am look forward to working with them one day soon…

Meeting everyone at the large and lively STRANGEco booth which was located in the Boutique Toy aisle

…showcasing toys by Friends With You, Nathan J, MARS-1,
Wootini, Dan Clowes, Superdeux, Rocketworld, James Jarvis…

Seeing some rather bizarre ¡Mucha Lucha! plush figures (licensed for the Mexican market by Angel Toy)  Bizarre, because when you squeeze the bigass Snowpea, he vibrates with Sr. Midcarda’s voice: “Lucharaaaaaan!!!” Squeeze Buena Girl – she also vibrates and the ML theme song plays!

     ML plush (vibrating, talking) figures

Meeting Tim Conroy, president of SCULPCO, the Cincinnati company who sculpted the ML Jakks figures. Very chuffed when Tim presented me with a special gift from Sculpco: the ‘master’ model of a Zero Kelvin figure (which will not be produced). How cool is this!!!

One of a kind, translucent Zero Kelvin!

Also met: the very nice Andrew Bell (Groob figures); Whitney & Kirby of the Rotofugi store in Chicago; (Memo to self: Must visit!); and Sally from Phony-Baloney (who’s a big ML fan, and whose mother is in The Sopranos! )

    with Sally

As for the rest of the Toy Fair… well, there was A LOT of stuff to take in. Action figures, cheezy plushes, creepy-looking realistic dolls, a millions different kinds of dice, costumes, casino games, and things that make you go Uh-huh…

In a week or so, I’m returning to NY for John’s and Bee’s xanga wedding of the century. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

  • ¡Mucha Lucha! Masks

Remember the bootleg Mucha Lucha masks from last year? You may also remember these very legitimate Halloween costumes (which we would rather forget). The ones you’re looking at here are somethin’ else. They are authentic, kid-size wrestling masks, custom-made by the amazing Juan Guerrero for our personal collection, and not for sale.

The Flea (black and yellow version), Rikochet & Buena Girl

Juan’s workmanship is truly fantastic and we hope that one day soon, these Mucha Lucha masks (made from soft lycra and vinyl) will be available for kids and fans of the show to enjoy. Below, some gems from the Lucha Guerrero store:

Other News: Watch ‘The Magnificent Three” episode this Saturday – Feb 26th at 7.30am on Kids WB network.  Featuring Blue Demon Jr!

    99 Cents!

This rainy afternoon, we paid a visit to our local 99 Cent store for the first time ever. What can we say – We felt like we’d been ripped off all our lives!!! From the outside, the merchandise had always seemed uninvitingly cheap and dodgy. Brand names you’d never heard of.

But besides the interesting crap like ceramic plates with images of biblical heroes on them (for 99c each!), who knew you could get so many basic necessities here? Household cleaning products, wall hooks, kitchen utensils, snack food. 99 cents for a bag of lemons … or a tire pressure gauge… or even Tylenol… We’re not going back to Target. The 99 Cent Store is awesome!!!

p.s. What makes brand name products like Tylenol cheaper in 99 Cent stores? Are they safe??

    Related Link: Operation Pennypinch (livejournal)

Operation Penny Pinch is a personal challenge upon ourselves (chiffonade and typefiend); a sociological, and physiological experiment of sorts to see how we fare relying completely upon the merchandise of the 99 Cents Only Stores for the duration of one month (4 weeks, 28 days)…”

  • We arrived late at tonight’s L.A. premiere of The Animation Show 2005 (where does one park around the Nu-Art Theatre?), so it’s a shame we missed a couple of the earlier shorts. We managed to catch the later part of Bill Plympton’s Guard Dog - hilarious!; which was followed by a very inspiring and interesting range of shorts in different media/styles.

Don Hertzfeldt’s quirky Meaning of Life took FOUR years to produce with no computers (!) – pretty crazy. One of my favourites was Australian Jonathan Nix’s  Hello - a really simple yet clever and quirky story about a Cassettedeck boy who finds true love with a CD Walkman girl.

One thing all these diverse films had in common, was the reliance on strong visual storytelling, as opposed to the snappy, dialogue-heavy scripts we’re used to in the TV/Film industry. Go see The Animation Show and support independent animation!

  • Loonateens!
    Eddie

In a move to counter the popularity of rival networks’ ‘That’s So Raven’, ‘Kim Possible’ and ‘Bratz’,  Warner Bros Animation announces the development of ‘Loonateens’, a 13 x half hour series which features the classic Looney Tunes characters, reimagined as teenage high school girls.

‘Lola Bunny’, ‘Daphne Duck’, ‘Rhoda Runner’ and ‘Penny Le Pew’, are some of the characters that will comprise the cast.

Said a Warner Bros Spokesperson: ‘Loonateens will have all the wit of the classic Looney Tunes cartoons from the golden age, but with a makeover to bring it into line with what girls are watching today. Instead of ‘What’s Up Doc’, we’ll be pushing  ’Whatever, dude’ as Lola Bunny’s catchphrase…”

When asked if this new series – together with Warner Bros other ‘reimagined’ Looney Tunes show, ‘Loonatics’ – represents a tarnishing of the work of such greats as Clampett, Jones, Avery and Freleng, Warner Bros. was adamant -

“Chuck would be pleased with the new show.  After all, Bugs often dressed in womens’ clothing.  This is just taking it to a new level…”

(P.S. This isn’t really being developed at WBA, but scarily, you can imagine something like this happening…- Lili )

  • Just found this! Fan art from Japan? (Artist unknown)

UPDATE: Greatest editorial EVER over at Cartoon Brew on this.  It really articulates what the majority of people who are passionate about animation, are thinking…

“…for every misguided show like LOONATICS, we lose out (and Warner Bros. loses out) on discovering the next Chuck Jones, the next Bob Clampett, the next Tex Avery, the next individual who could be creating the Bugs Bunny’s and Daffy Duck’s of our generation. There are countless modern creators out there who have ideas…who have something to say…and it’s a slap in the face of every talented artist working in this business whenever a major animation studio chickens out like this.” - Amid

    Jerry Beck adds:

“It’s a good business decision for them – evergreen characters (i.e. Winnie The Pooh & Scooby-Doo) are worth billions to these companies. Attempting to continue a cartoon star with a proven track record is seen as low risk. If the original creators, artists, voice actors are gone – the less strings attached – the potential for profits are even higher. The company can now control every creative aspect of the revival initiative. No fussy creative types to kowtow to. In an era of creator-driven cartoons, a corporate-owned property is the safest bet they can place.”

When I first saw this image that Lili recently Flashed, I couldn’t help but think of the great Tezuka/Japanese cartoons I grew up with; ‘The Amazing Three’, ‘Astro Boy’, ‘Prince Planet’, ‘Space Ace’…there is just something really 60′s and Japanese about this, and I love it.
