Wednesday night we joined some friends at Philippes for dinner and the conversation turned to books and writers. Anna was reading Nabakov’s Lolita which inspired us to hire out the DVD last night. (The original 1962 movie by Stanley Kubrick, not the Jeremy Irons remake).

It’s brilliant. I loved the book when I read it at 16; I’d forgotten how wonderful the movie is too – the character drama, the Nelson Riddle score, that infectious song…

Eddie:  Yeah, Lili and I decided we needed to watch Lolita again.  Man, I’d forgotten just how great this movie is.  So risque for 1962; my favorite bit is when Lolita is packed off to spend Summer at a camp for girls (‘Camp Climax’, no less!).  Peter Sellers as swingin’ sophisticate Clare Quilty is awesome.  And the movie is shot brilliantly.  But best of all is the song ‘Lolita Ya Ya’…I think I feel a Muerte mash-up coming on…

Just got back from seeing Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow! Lots of fun, if you like superstylized art direction, pulpy adventure-romance cliches and giant robots!

  • Man, my friend has been goin’ on and on about Philippe’s and their french dip… makin’ me hungry.  I might have to travel to LA just to go there.
    Happy birthday… uh, everyone!

  • It would seem that you are correct, it is a Virgo, Virgo, Virgo world. Double Virgo for some in this family.I will try to check out the ‘toon next week!

  • Hi Dram – Philippe’s is a Downtown L.A. institution. Yes you should check it out! It’s very old school with long wooden benches and sawdust on the floors. The sandwiches are good too

  • Phillipe’s is an LA dee-lite.  The waitress outfits include hats.  It’s so oldskool, that you almost expect to see Perry Mason and Della Street chomping down a French dip at one of the tables.  -Eddie

  • The fact that we were born roughly nine months after New Year’s Eve probably accounts for the sheer number of us Virgos…:)

  • Happy Birthday to all the Virgos from a Libra (Sept. 29).  Anyone born in September is super cool and super smart!!  The pics are adorable!

  • Looks like a good party.?Sorry I missed.?Happy Birthday to all, and to all a good night.-GH

  • Those question marks aren’t intentional.  It’s not like sass or something.  These damned Chinese computers do the strangest things.-GH

  • GH?  Chinese Computers?  That can only mean one person…
Mr. Sass himself…Hi Garth!  We miss you too. -Eddie
