  • Something’s gone very weird with xanga’s xtools… no text formatting or hyperlinking options. It also took several attempts to get to this page. Let’s hope this post works.

Tomorrow’s a big day. We’re getting photographed in the morning – this is in conjunction with an interview we did re: Australians who have such busy lives that there is no separation between their professional and private lives. Yep, that’s us.

Then Peter is coming over with a videotaped copy (because we can’t get clear SBS reception) of the tackiest show known to mankind -
    the Eurovision Song Contest!

…in terms of kitsch, tackiness, geopolitical tension, and sheer entertainment value the U.S. has nothing, but nothing, to match the Eurovision Song Contest. The Eurovision is the common cultural bond uniting generations of Europeans, the continent’s one true collective ritual.

There’s a great description on this blog (Eurovision 2003).

According to Eddie, who watched the preliminaries on Friday night in Melbourne, the winning song from the Ukraine is in fact the best because it’s visually, the tackiest (the girls wore Xena Warrior Princess outfits!). There’s also some really cringeworthy dancing from Latvia.

Eddie: “You HAVE TO see this guy dance! If Latvia hasn’t made it into the finals, I’ll do the dance for you. It’s so bad it’s the most unfunky thing you’ve ever seen.”

Lili: “Can you do the dance anyway?”

(There is also a weblog dedicated entirely to Eurovision
    HERE.)

And because I can’t resist writing this – tomorrow (17th) is also my birthday What I really really want is a dog. (Or a cat) But I know that’s not practical with our frequent travelling, stay-back-late-at-work lifestyle.

  • Happy birthday Lili!
A dog would be very cool to have. I’m a big fan of Pugs myself, but any unusually looking dog is a winner in my book. Some day I’d love to have a Bull Mastiff that I could ride to work…
Hope you have a happy b-day!

  • happy birthday!!  i know it’s tomorrow… but i got so excited, wanted to wish you a happy birthday right away!
weird about the xtools editor… this was on the same computer/browser/os you usually use?

  • Many happies! We have shit reception for SBS too, but I caught little snippets of the crap-fest that is Eurovision. Mmm, tacky!

  • thank you!!!!
john – i had just installed xtools on my new laptop (winxp) and was editing an entry i’d started on the old computer (win98)… maybe this had something to do with it. I was getting a “Service Unavailable” message when I clicked on ‘edit’. … But don’t worry, everything seems ok now! – Lili

  • Happy b-day from Beijing! I’m not sure how I managed to miss the Eurovision song contest when I lived in Germany. However, I did catch an episode of “Tutti Frutti”…a game show where the losing contestants had to take off their clothes and dance. The best part was that it was broadcast in 3-D! You had to get the special glasses at the local gas station.

  • Happy birthday!  Uh… today… or yesterday… or the day after next… I never did figure out that whole International Date Line thing.

  • ok i’m back to wish an official HAPPY BIRTHDAY LILI!!!
