Found at Surry Hills (flea) markets: An old, wind-up music tin for $55 (too much, we thought) The earless Bugs figure that pops up is a little creepy…
We also noticed that the cute porcelain piggy bank (which I so wanted to buy last year)was still there, and finally sold to a couple with the cash.
The store owner: Ninety-five dollars. It’s from Germany.
Lili: Yes, I can see that.
Books bought (from Kinokuniya) -
Salam Pax and Harvey Pekar are in Sydney at the end of this month. If we are still here, we might go to this event. (American Splendor is still on our list of movies to see…)

Singapore’s Tiger Balm Gardens is like a “hell” theme park. (linked via boingboing) On our Hong Kong trip a couple of years ago, we went to visit the original Tiger Balm gardens. Imagine our disappointment when we arrived (after a long bus trip and walking in humid heat) to see a mess of bulldozers and construction workers. Tiger Balm Gardens had been replaced by new apartment blocks

Wow. That Tiger Balm Gardens link was intresting. I’m sure many a person has walked away from that place a bit shakened up. The closest thing we have to that in the States would be Wal-Mart. I still cry everytime I go there…
yeah! At the same time the whole place is so unbelievably tacky. The Hong Kong gardens, when they existed, would have been surrounded by skyscrapers. (There’s also a book)
Everyone keeps warning us about Wal-Mart we still haven’t seen or been to any. I have to admit that the more horror stories I hear about the place, the more curious I get … (not that I want to support Wal-mart)

Wow, those are pretty high prices for a flea market! Are German piggy banks and jack-in-the-boxes really that collectible? When I was in Singapore a few years ago, I kept meaning to go to Tiger Balm Gardens but never went. Now I’m really sorry I didn’t.There’s nothing wrong with Wal-Mart the store, it’s the clientele. Whenever I go there I see 300-lb women in floral-patterned spandex, toothless meth addicts with mullets, dirty, screaming children, etc. It’s like my worst trailer-park nightmare (and I say that as someone who lived in a trailer park for many years).
Yes those prices are high, but Australia is an expensive place these days…$15.00 to see a movie, $34 to $40 for a CD…
…and don’t get me started on books!

Being from the South, I can verify MrBaliHai’s claim. Wal-Mart is a breeding ground for dirty people. If you want to see White Trash in their natural habitat, look no further than the blue sign with the white letters… it’s like a porch light to bugs. seriously.
Wow. I didn’t realize it was so bad…

I’m exaggerating a bit. It’s probably not that bad all over. A good rule of thumb would be the smaller the town, the more intresting the store… especially at nite.
