Month: February 2003

    • Empty War Head  - Jeff’s CD mix at AOTM.
    • Masking Bush (this one has been around the blogosphere for a while, but anytime is a great time to revisit it)

Just found this Moon hoax interview (real audio) with Jamie Leonarder – whom we happen to meet at the peace march today!

Create a Nation!- Choose a flag, national animal, national currency, govt. style… This is a ‘nation simulation’ game we’re still trying to figure out. First try: The Free Republic of Fwakamole Aargh! What have we started here?!

  • Tomorrow – Sunday 16th Feb – 12.00pm – Hyde Park - We’ll be walking against war in Iraq. There were 100,000 protesters in Melbourne yesterday. Let’s hope for even more numbers tomorrow.

The only graphic novel I’ve read by Paul Pope is Heavy Liquid, and I loved its raw, brushy, “noir” style. Just found this great interview  with Paul Pope on the subject of Manga.

PULP: So you think that manga at its best is character-driven.
POPE: Oh, absolutely. I mean, when I was working at Kodansha, they always said, “We don’t care what the story’s about–just give us a character that we care about; give us a personality that we want to look at, that we want to identify with, that we want to understand. And that was really the thing that they were always driving home. - etc

  • Music Documentaries

Last nite we saw Standing in the Shadows of Motown - a film about the studio musicians – The Funk Brothers - who created the Motown sound, but who never received the credit they deserved, until now. An enjoyable film but we both felt it could have been better. Too much banter, and bad editing didn’t really make up for the lack of archival footage…

Over the last two weeks, we have also been watching  Jazz a 4-DVD (12-episode) series on the history of jazz in America. A documentary that charts the evolution of jazz from it’s roots in New Orleans’ blues and the jitterbuggers’ Swing era to the more intellectual styles of bebop … ending with jazz musicians in the 80′s/90′s we’d never heard of. It was interesting how jazz was once THE “mainstream popular music” of America. Then it became  obscure, avant-garde and an acquired taste. At first, the People’s music. Now, the Musicians’ music.

There was also an animated moment in the Bebop chapter – what looked like a very 50′s stylized cartoon. There is a little king with a big moustache, and a band of musicians. Anyone know what cartoon this is from? We couldn’t find anything in the credits.

  • Duct and cover, everyone!
    Something for this Valentine’s Day…

Another oddity: The Mickey Mouse gas mask for children.

  • Mucha Lucha will be finishing its first season run on Kids WB (USA) as of this coming Saturday (15th Feb). Kids WB will be promoting new shows, so no ML on US TV until March, possibly… Anyway, we know for a fact that the series is showing in Australia, Canada, Italy, and the UK. Anywhere else? Let us know!

Season 2 production started officially on Monday.

Currently reading:  Michael Moore’s ‘Stupid White Men’. Scary stuff. Didn’t know that Colin Powell’s son was in charge of AOL/Time Warner… Didn’t realize the full extent to which the US media is biased & pro-republican.

Went and saw Bowling For Columbine on Wednesday – this is a great documentary that needed to be made. Some very funny animation on the ‘History of the USA’. Especially liked the nod to “making a cartoon” as emotional outlet/political statement. (as in the case of South Park’s Matt and Trey) And it’s so true – Americans are SCARED of everything. American culture is totally driven by fear.

Now Showing: a new Flash movie from the guys at Augenblick studios ! “Plugs McGuiness, Seeing Eye Dog”. These guys always do stunning work. Notice the recurring themes of sex, drugs and alcohol in all their shows?

  • We have been invited to participate in an international group show VIVA LUCHA! at Gallery Bink in May 2003. (Our friend Jorge/SuperMacho is the curator). The list of participating artists is AMAZING! … Jorge Alderete, Tim Biskup, Miles Thompson….

Señores y señoritas, welcome to… “VIVA LUCHA!” -A Mexploitationextravaganza celebrating the crazy and heroic luchadores, Mexican masked wrestlers, in all their glorious splendor! For thousands of years these masked phenomenons have inspired countless artistas all over the world.

For this one special occasion, watch as an eclectic and international mix of talent from the decadent worlds of fine art, illustration and animation go mano a mano! Weep as you read their insatiable love letters to lucha libre! Behold the mysterious power of the masks as it destroys more than one artist’s noble vision! Watch in awe as some retire from their craft after horribly losing their honor on the canvas!

Yes amigos, this will not be for the faint of heart. Prepare yourself, pray to your gods, kiss your loved ones good bye, do three shots of Tequila and enter the world of VIVA LUCHA!!!

  • FLASH and XANGA

After seeing a funny Chinese New Year Flash movie on japanese_apple’s weblog  (scroll down, press PLAY), I knew there had to be a way to embed Flash .swf files on these Xanga pages…. After some searching around, I found the HTML code and so here’s a test.

Yay it works! The HTML code I used (and this isn’t the same one that Macromedia provides which is half a page long) is:

    <P align=center><EMBED style=”WIDTH: ?px; HEIGHT: ?px” src=http://yourservername/file.swf width=?px height=?px type=application/x-shockwave-flash></P>

This means that I will be able to post samples of our Flash animation on these blog pages (if the file sizes aren’t too big).

  • Read this Animation Magazine.net newsflashAAARRRGGGHHH!!???!!

  • It’s 1.30am - we’re still here at the studio and it’s so hot and humid. Just spent the last couple of hours desiging ‘martial arts’ characters for a new WB Animation property (not created by us).

One of the main characters is described in the showbible as a “Taoist George Bush meets Andre the Giant”… Hmmm.

The Cosmic Baby Maintitle theme will be ready soon. Can’t wait to hear the “orchestra”. In the meantime here is a picture and the lyrics (Music: think Astro Boy theme meets ‘Go West’ by the Village People)

    COSMIC BABY (Anthem)

Who’s the tiny taikonaut who blasted to the stars?
Our shining glory in the race for space
One Thousand Year Old Egg is there to guide her on her quest,
With Laika and The Alberts giving chase.

    (Chorus)
    Go Cosmic Baby
    Go Cosmic Baby
Go Cosmic Baby – Watch over all we do
    Go Cosmic Baby
    Go Cosmic Baby
    Our hero in the stars
    The baby in the moon!

    Our hero in the stars..
    The baby in the moon!
