Month: February 2003

  • There is a great little shop in Dixon Street, Chinatown that sells just about any anime movie/series you can think of (as well as a huge selection of HK flicks) I’m not sure if these are pirated versions but who cares? – the quality is good, the prices are affordable.

The shop is cluttered and everything is labelled in Chinese (also subtitled/dubbed in Chinese), but with a little patience I found what I was looking for: The Happiness of the Katakuris! ($18 VCD) We saw this at the Syd Film Festival last year – best described as a horror musical comedy (a la Sound of Music) with cheesy songs and some great claymation sequences. (read psychotronic’s review)

We also picked up DVDs of Gatchaman, the Kinnikuman series (A wacky ‘wrestling’ series which was ML‘s competition on FOX in the US at the same time slot), and a copy of FLCL for Jonathan.

The story in FLCL (otherwise known as Furi Kuri) is hard to follow especially when trying to take in the visuals and read subtitles at the same time; the animation is just mayhem with extremes. A fast mishmash of manga styles, great title music. (here’s a review)

Watched Spumco’s Ranger Smith and Boo Boo Runs Wild today with the guys here. Boo Boo Runs Wild is genuinely funny! Ranger Smith - a bit laboured by comparison. We read in Animation Blast magazine that it took John K. and crew THREE YEARS to produce these two eps … ??

Lorraine came to visit and we were discussing what it takes to set up and run an animation business. It was great talking about the local industry, people we know, and our future plans – I think one thing Eddie and I are both clear on is that we never want to become a big company like Yoram Gross or Energee. We never want to leave the drawing board and move into purely administration areas. We would rather stay a small team and have fun producing shows that we can remain passionate about. I think we all agreed on what Bill Plympton has to say about surviving in the animation biz:

I believe the two most important qualities to become a success in making short or even long films is to make them funny and produce them cheaply. Most of my films cost about $1,000.00 per minute, so it’s fairly easy to recoup my costs.

It’s very important to me to remain independent. There’s something exhilarating about getting up each morning, going to my drawing board and having the total freedom to draw whatever crazy, bizarre and offensive image that comes to my brain – there’s no producer, director, lawyer or agent looking over my shoulder telling me to change the art because it might offend someone or hurt sales.

Sure, I’m not a wealthy cartoonist but I’m willing to sacrifice money for freedom of expression any time. So, that’s why it’s so important that I promote my merchandise. It’s a wonderful way to disseminate my bizarre ideas through different media and more importantly, it helps finance my future productions.

  • Like everyone else, we want to see The Two Towers. Surely, even the 3D animation has to be a million times better than in Phantom Menace – which was on TV the other night (Eddie: “It’s like watching the Muppets without the comedy”) And then we found this review which is a perfect complement to this poster

Thanks, Marc for sending us these…

  • CROP CIRCLES

Watched a documentary last night: Crop Circles: Quest for Truth. This video is worth seeing. We weren’t aware of their sheer quantity and just how stunningly complex most of them were. Forget ‘Signs’ the movie. This is awesome evidence that a different consciousness exists and is communicating something. The crops are very NEATLY bent and folded down, and the designs are geometrically PERFECT. Interesting that none of the scientists and researchers interviewed for this movie subscribe to the UFO theory.

According to Gazecki, what “Signs” gets wrong about crop circles can be summed up in three words: pretty much everything. (read interview with the filmmaker)

Eddie’s review of Signs: “Like everyone else, I didn’t understand how aliens had the technology to travel to earth but couldn’t get through a boarded-up farm door.”

  • Yu-Mex: Mexican music in fifties Yugoslavia
“This is a small homage to hundreds of performers who covered themselves with sombreros to become Slavic Mexicans” – the website owner

  • The DC COMICS website has some info up on the Mucha Lucha comics. Issue #1 info and b/w cover art can be found in the APRIL releases; Issue #2 is in the MAY releases. (scroll right down the list)

Cover for Issue #2 “It’s All Buena!”. All these issues will be available from Kings Comics, in Sydney.

  • Cowboy Bebop the movie opens soon this March. We’re going to a sneak preview at Dendy Martin Place next Wednesday. Also going to the Footbridge Theatre this Saturday to see Jo Jo perform in The Flower Drum song.

Currently seeking: contact details for Brazo de Plata aka Super Porky. Would love to have a real luchador guest voice on ¡Mucha Lucha!

I received a phone call today from the Melbourne International Animation Festival Posse: What’s the perfect venue in Sydney for an animation festival screening? All of us at Fwak! suggested either Dendy Opera Quays, or the Valhalla (where it was held last year). For a bit o’ fun… cast your vote here.

  • COMICS, ZINES and Stuff…

    Firstly, a few Thank you’s.

Thanks to JF Tranquille who sent us the latest issue of his zine: Plan Dementure Wrestling Ghoul (Australia’s own wacky lucha pop-culture zine). Cool 3D cover, JF! It’s getting slicker with every issue. And thanks for the six-page ¡Mucha Lucha! plug.

Thanks to Lorraine for linking to Fwak! on her animation links page which is worth checking out. (We’re also fans of Mumbleboy)

Thanks to Kirsten who sent me the link to this new indie comics zine: Prophecy Magazine ,which looks very interesting. Must remember to look out for it when we’re next in the US.

Michael has recently received the complete set (Issues #1-8) of Animation Blast magazine. What an inspiration for any animator/designer! The only mag where you are more likely to find an interview with an artist, than with the president of a large animation company…

Our Feb 2003 issue of Animation Magazine also arrived today.(wow – it’s on time for once) This magazine is getting increasingly irrelevant. Too much reporting on the comings and goings of vice presidents, and 3D special fx technology.

    Other magazines we subscribe to/read:

  • Go Cosmic Baby! Today we recorded the Cosmic Baby theme song vocals. Exciting stuff! Still needs a little bit of remixing by DJ Mort and it should be ready to go.

LISTEN: The Cosmic Baby Anthem  (swf movie with very compressed mp3) Melody and lyrics by Eddie Mort; Arrangement and music by Michael Dunn; Sung by Jo Jo Yee and Lili Chin simulating the Children’s Revolutionary Choir.

  • Link: 170 Protest Pictures from around the World on Feb 15th and 16th. But our favorite has got to be this one (from Sydney):

  • Peace Rally

We were at Hyde Park around noon and it was packed. It was 1.30pm before we made it to the cnr of Elizabeth and King Streets, and well after 3.00pm when we arrived at George Street outside Town Hall. There could have easily been half a million people there.
